BOOK: Touch The Top Of The World: My Story
AUTHOR: Erik Weihenmayer
GRADE: B-
The idea of successfully climbing Mount Everest seems as plausible as flying to the moon for me - and I have awesome vision. The idea of doing so while blind seems simply preposterous; almost like something out of a science fiction novel. Yet, that (and more) is exactly what the awe-inspiring Weihenmayer did. His climbs were funding and supported by various organizations for the blind. His goal: to raise awareness that the blind in this country are not useless disabled persons; destined to a life of helplessness and boredom. And he does this with vengeance.
Touch The Top of The World is simply inspiring. While the quality of writing is less than top notch, the inspiration still filters through. What Weihenmayer was able to accomplish despite the repeated warnings he will never succeed, is a testament to mind over matter and where there's a will, there's a way. His inventiveness with equipment and skills designed specifically for him is incredible and his refusal to take advantage of any special treatment or lessened work loads is admirable.
Overall, it's an interesting and inspiring read. I'd recommend it to anyone who needs a little reminder that with lots of hard work, anything is possible.
